Why Finding What or Who You Are Is Your Life Mission?

It doesn’t matter whether you are “spiritual” as in finding out what or who you are; sooner or later you’ll face this question. Guaranteed! This can happen in the next five minutes, or aeons of time away. But, you’ll not rest till you reach the destination – your true nature.
And what is the power that forces you to do that? Consciousness.
Understanding consciousness is one of the toughest tasks that any spiritual seeker will face. Why? Because the understanding of consciousness we acquire through the years of schooling and acquiring knowledge has little to do with the spiritual meaning of consciousness. And before you throw your arms in a gesture of resignation, know this: to reach the Highest – the Absolute, you’ll have to cross and “understand” the consciousness lying prior to THAT.
The way Reality is “designed”, the only way for the spiritual seeker to reach Realization is to comprehend, and then discard the consciousness that lies in the way.

I am yet to find a better set of instructions on how to apprehend consciousness, than “PRIOR to CONSCIOUSNESS” talks by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj edited by Jean Dunn.
This is where all quotes (“in italics“) that follow came from.
The most memorable, and one that explains spirituality to a novice and grizzled practitioner alike, is right here:
When asked: “If my life gives me great satisfaction and happiness, why should I bother about what or who I am?”
Maharaj answered: “This consciousness will not rest until it gets the answer. This consciousness cannot bear its own existence, cannot bear its own consciousness.” Doesn’t it answer everything?
Now you know why you’re doing “it!”
But to do it at your highest potential and reach the destination faster, time to get to know consciousness better.
“Consciousness, as it is used here, is this sense of being alive, of being present, the sense of existence. It is the love of being that is the source and cause of all desires.”

Following are Maharaj’s pointers to comprehending it better:

  1. “Consciousness is a temporary condition which has come upon the total, timeless, spaceless, changeless state. It is a happening which has come and which will disappear.”
  2. “In consciousness there can exist nothing without its interrelated counterpart. The moment you say knowledge, knowledge can only be in ignorance. Anything in consciousness is only a concept and therefore it has to be wrong.”
  3. “Your consciousness alone is taking care of everything; look at your consciousness as God.”
  4. “In the universal manifest consciousness is there anything good or bad? Nothing of the sort.”
  5. “At the present time, in manifestation, what you are is the consciousness, and the consciousness cannot remain unless the food body is there; therefore consciousness depends on the food body – which is essentially of an ephemeral nature – and I cannot be that. It’s as simple as that!”
  6. “This love of being is not of an individual being, it is the nature of the entire universal consciousness.”
  7. “Throw away every thought, every experience, everything that happens after this consciousness has come. Anything that is sensorially seen and interpreted by the mind is an appearance in consciousness, and is not true.”

Now, that the picture is hopefully clearer, you must reinforce the conviction in THAT that you are.
Have you understood that you are the witness of the consciousness that appears on you? You are not the consciousness, you are not the knowledge, Sat-guru (the Absolute) is your true nature.
And finally, have a clear vision of your life’s single purpose: to merely understand that what has been manifested as functioning of the universal consciousness; there’s nothing more to be done.
Your spirituality is only limited by your comprehension of that that powers it.
